Thomas P. M. Barnett is an American military strategist, author, and public speaker. He is best known for his book "The Pentagon's New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-First Century" which was published in 2004 and became a New York Times bestseller. In the book, he proposed a new way of thinking about U.S. national security in the post-Cold War world that incorporated globalization and the interconnectedness of nations.
Barnett was born in Chilton, Wisconsin in 1962 and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a PhD in political science. He served in the U.S. Navy as a surface warfare officer and later worked as a researcher at the Center for Naval Warfare Studies at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.
In addition to his book, Barnett has written articles and given presentations on his ideas about global security and the role of the U.S. in maintaining global stability. He has also served as a consultant to the U.S. government, including the Department of Defense, and worked as a professor at the U.S. Naval War College and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
Barnett's work has been both praised and criticized, with many appreciating his unique perspective on global security and the need for a new approach to national defense, while others have criticized his proposals as unrealistic or overly optimistic. Nevertheless, he remains an important and influential voice in the field of international relations and security.
